Thank you to our volunteers

On Friday 22 January, 26 of Pepenbury's volunteers attended a Thank You lunch at the Smith & Western restaurant in Tunbridge Wells. The event was arranged to thank them for giving so much of their time to help the organisation. Although many volunteers were unable to attend, we hope to have another one in the future. All who could attend thoroughly enjoyed it and commented on how much benefit and pleasure they got from their volunteering roles.

Take That on Ice

Thank you to the Ramada Hotel Tunbridge Wells who, despite being let down at the last minute by the Ice Skating Rink Company, still went ahead and held a ‘Tribute Take That’ concert without the ice.  The evening was very well supported by people from local businesses and customers of the hotel.  A number of the residents from Pepenbury came along and had a wonderful evening of good food and dancing to ‘Take That’.  During the evening a cheque for £400 was presented to Nigel Hill Fundraising Manager.  A big thank you goes to Dennis Vaz the manager of the Hotel who, in the face of adversity, organized a very enjoyable evening.

Head of Borough visits Pepenbury

We were very pleased to be able to show Roy Bullock, Leader of Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, around Pepenbury before Christmas. Roy has been meaning to come to see us for some time but has found it difficult to find the time out of his busy schedule. The important thing is that he has now visited and has a better idea of what we do.

We didn’t win……………

Having been one of two finalists in the ‘Best Growing Business’ section of the West Kent Business Awards it was disappointing when the award went to the other one on the night! Having said that, the winners – Kit for Kids – is a new commercial business that is really going places, so it is no dishonour for a charity to come so close. It is a testament to the whole staff team that we were in the final two.

Congratulations to the winners.

                     IT'S ALL PLAIN SAILING

Pepenbury users have been making a splash at Bough Beech reservoir.

The group has been learning how to sail at the Sailability programme using specially designed dinghies.

Pepenbury is one of the groups which has benefited from the idea, having finished its second season of sailing.

Earlier in the year each sailor was given an achievement award.

Pepenbury fundraiser Nigel Hill said: "This group had never sailed before but with the careful tuition and nurturing by the instructors and helpers at Bough Beech they've made remarkable progress. Many can now sail solo in specially designed boats and others helm and crew the larger Laser Stratos keel dinghies."

FUNDING FOR RECYCLING

Pepenbury has been awarded £7000 from the Community Waste Action Fund.  The funding will be used to improve recycling, composting and waste reduction facilities in the Pepenbury grounds.  It will be used to purchase recycling containers, compost bins and a garden waste shredder for the care home so the residents and users have access to recycling services.  Other recycling services are also planned, for the general public, such as Christmas Tree recycling.

Pepenbury will also work with the wider community to increase recycling and waste reduction through workshops and events. For example the community plans to involve themselves in the KWP’s award winning ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign and learn how to reduce food wastage and therefore effectively save money.

Councillor Paul Barrington-King commented, “Pepenbury is a fantastic organisation that supports and plays a large part in the local community. I’m delighted the Kent Waste Partnership was able to contribute towards the excellent service they provide, and understand they will wholly support them by providing information to residents on waste issues.”
