Facilities - Poppies
Poppies is part of the Pepenbury group, which as an organisation has provided residential support to adults with Learning Disabilities since 1927.
Who Are We?
Poppies is a registered residential care home, which has been designed to provide support within a homely environment for six people with Learning Disabilities and complex / diverse needs and possible associated health issues. Additional support is offered to assist our service users to engage in activities either within the home or in the community as required.
We have a hard working, flexible team of support staff, who have trained experience in working in this field of support. Along with managers, senior support workers and support workers, there are waking night staff on shift where necessary and a member of staff sleeps in over night.
Where are we?
Poppies is a spacious house built in the 1920's which is situated in Southborough, on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, Kent. We have a small but well developed surrounding garden.
It is only a short walk away from the local shops and amenities. Access to public transport is relatively easy when any further journeys are necessary and there are many country walks to take advantage of in the surrounding area.
The property itself is a large detached house, on three floors. The ground floor has been adapted so it can accommodate people with either limited mobility or who are wheelchair-dependent.
The main living area is very spacious. We have an open plan kitchen which leads into the lounge with a separate dining area within the conservatory. Other facilities on the ground floor include a laundry room, fully accessible toilet and two bedrooms.
The first floor has a further three bedrooms, bathroom and an office area for staff. The second floor has one bedroom and a bedroom for supporting staff.
Each Service User is encouraged to individually decorate and furnished their bedrooms to their own personal taste. Each bedroom also has ensuite facilities comprising of a sink, toilet and wet room shower area.
Our Aim
Poppies has been designed to ensure that the accommodation provides a safe and secure environment to meet the individual needs of our Service Users. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive, unique and individual service to enable Service Users to live as ordinary a life as possible. This is achieved through a proactive approach of individual choice and participation and where necessary additional support to engage in activities will be supplied to enable us to provide opportunities both within the home and community.
Activities
Each person is encouraged to lead a full and active life, as appropriate to meeting their needs and wishes, whether within an educational setting, the community or in the home.
Within the home :-
We encourage and support involvement in day-to-day running of the home such as general cleaning, cooking, menu planning and participating in the weekly house meeting. This is where discussions take place in an open forum to talk about any issues and to plan the following week and future events.
Occupational :-
We are able to provide support for people to attend training, if desired, by accessing day activities or by utilising other external resources.
Leisure :-
Local community facilities are accessed and utilised with appropriate staff support, this includes shops, pubs / restaurants, banks and churches etc. Within the home we support people to engage in activities of either learning skills or recreational entertainment.
All the Service Users that reside at Poppies are able to invite their families and friends for visits and social events, for example parties, meals. If required, support will be given to make arrangements for service users to maintain contact with family members and friends.
To arrange a visit to Poppies or for further enquiries please contact Kara Thomas, Manager.
