Pepenbury was founded in 1927 at Larkfield near Maidstone, as a home for young people with learning disabilities. The home moved to Cornford Farm, Pembury, and became registered with the local authority, Kent County Council, as a permanent residential home for people with learning disabilities.
Today, the on-site residence in Pembury Pepenbury provides residential care, day services and supports people living independently in the community.

A diverse range of people are catered for, including those with particularly complex needs and challenging behaviour who might need long-term ‘on-site’ care. Others are helped to progress to independent living and train in life and work skills, building their confidence and self-esteem. All have round-the-clock support and person-centred care.

Pepenbury’s mission is: “to enhance the independence, potential and quality of life, of adults with learning, physical and other disabilities, by the provision of a stimulating, safe and supportive environment.”

In 1989 a successful fund raising campaign enabled a swimming pool to be built next to the Craft Workshops and an all weather tunnel means that this facility can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Due to the increasing special needs of some residents, a decision was made in 1992 to increase staff in order to provide the necessary care that they require. In 1998, again following a successful fund raising campaign, it was possible to refurbish ‘Briars’ house to make it suitable for our most dependent residents. The cost of the refurbishment was in excess of £200,000. It is hoped, when funds permit, that further refurbishment of other units will take place.

As a charity we rely on the support of the local community and donations and sponsorship from private benefactors and companies. In 2008 we are celebrating are 80th Birthday with a number of fundraising activities. We will aim to raise public awareness of the important work we do supporting people with disabilities.
